The short version. Pills Taken is two halves that talk to each other, so unlike a purely on-device app, it does keep information on a server. It has to: the whole point is that a family member can set up medications from somewhere else and see whether they were confirmed. What is kept is listed in full below. It is never sold, never used for advertising, and never shared with anyone outside the family members who were given access.
The name of each medication, how it is described (for example "1 small white pill"), any instruction attached to it such as "take with breakfast", the times of day it is due, and how many units are in the container. These are entered by the family member setting the app up, not by the person taking the medication.
When the Taken button is pressed, and for which dose. If a dose is never confirmed before its window closes, that is recorded too. A confirmation records that a button was pressed. It is not a record that a pill was swallowed, and this app never claims otherwise.
The name their family chooses to call them, their time zone, and optionally a phone number so the app can offer a Call button. The app never invents a name: it stays blank until a family member supplies one.
If a family member chooses to use that part of the web app, blood pressure, weight, and free-text symptom notes can be recorded, along with when they were measured. This is entirely optional, it is only ever entered on the web by the family, and the app is never asked for it on the phone.
For each family member using the web app: an email address, a name, and a password, which is handled by our authentication provider and is never visible to us in readable form. Invitation codes and, if one is given, the email address an invitation was sent to.
A notification token for each device so reminders and alerts can be delivered, and whether the device reports that its own notifications have been switched off. The app reads the device's time zone setting so doses land at the right local time. It does not use GPS or any location service.
No contacts, no photos, no microphone or camera access, no GPS location, no advertising identifier, and no analytics or tracking of any kind. Nothing is shared with data brokers. There is no advertising in this app and no third party is permitted to track you across other apps or websites.
Information is stored in a Postgres database hosted by Supabase, and the web app runs on Vercel. Both are in the United States. Two other services are used narrowly:
Only the family members who have been given access to that person's record, and only after someone already on the record invited them. Access is given in one of two ways: the person on the phone reads a code aloud, or an existing owner sends an invitation. Family members can be given full access or view only, and access can be removed at any time from the People page.
The developer can technically reach the database in order to operate and repair the service, and does not read individual records for any other purpose.
From the iPhone. Tap the connection row at the bottom of the main screen, then Delete everything, then confirm. This permanently removes the whole record: the medications, the times, and every dose ever confirmed. The reminders stop and nothing is kept.
From the web app. Go to the People page and choose Delete my account. If you are the only person in charge of someone's record, that record is deleted with you, and the confirmation says so by name before anything happens. If someone else shares it, the record stays with them and only your sign in is removed.
A family member can also remove a single medication, remove another family member's access, or leave a record, at any time, without deleting anything else.
Deletion is immediate and permanent. There is no grace period and no archived copy. Deleting the app from the iPhone on its own only stops the reminders on that phone, so use Delete everything first if you want the record gone.

Pills Taken is free. There are no subscriptions and no in-app purchases, so it never asks for or handles payment information.
Pills Taken is a reminder and a record. It does not diagnose anything, does not interpret a blood pressure or a weight as high, low, or concerning, and does not advise what to take or when. Those decisions belong with a doctor or pharmacist.
Pills Taken is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from them.
